at least in my experience, they are good for well over 100,000 miles of service. While they caused a lot of subie owners grief with recurring problems for awhile, by the mid 2000's the head gasket had been redesigned a few times and the final iteration has proven to be rather durable. The 2.5 liter 4-cam engine that was problematic with the head gasket failures was a 1997-1999 production. ![]() You should get 19/26 mpg in the Forester, can't say about the sedan without knowing which one. The newer (and older) ones have been great. ![]() Those mid 90s-early 2000 years there were problems with a certain engine, I can't remember which but they were terrible. I agree with the lower mileage and newer Forester, not only because you will get more miles out of it but because the sedans are over-priced due to their popularity used, not nearly as many were made and people hold onto them.
